The painting depicted three black men sitting on a bench totally nude. Two of the black men seated had black penises but the one sitting in the middle had a pink penis.
The curator of the gallery realised that the couple were having trouble interpreting the painting so he offered them his assessment. He went on and on for nearly half an hour explaining how it represented the sexual emasculation of Afro-Caribeans in predominately white patriarchal society.
I fact, he pointed out that some serious critics believed the pink penis reflected the cultural and social oppression expressed by gay men in a contemporary society.
After the curator left a Welshman approached the couple and said "Would you like me to tell you what the painting is 'really' about?"
The couple said "How would you claim to know more about that painting than the curator of the gallery?"
"Because I'm the guy that painted it." He replied "In fact there's no Afro-Caribean representation at all." He went on.
"They're just three Welsh coal miners and the guy in the middle went home for lunch."
